"Tch."
Well, this was a fine little spot to be in, wasn't it? As with every year, it was time to introduce the new Freshmen to the halls of this duel college, and it was time to hold the rites of the new school year. Seasoned students (and faculty) knew where to find free food to not have to waste the early part of their meal plan, while the young'ns came around with their parents and the like, to see where they would be staying for the next year.
For many, it was a grand time to get to know this wonderful establishment.
For Alice Izumi, it seemed largely like a waste of time. This teacher wasn't a famous or established figure, nor a sensation in the duel world. In fact, this college-level job came mostly from the fact that she didn't need a teaching degree to do this, and thus could settle into her own methods. Her harsh style would roughly polish those who had potential, and leave the rest struggling to keep up.
She had no interest in mere formalities. With her duel disc slung over her shoulder, Alice pulled a strand of braided hair out from over her eyes, taking a walk past a block full of steaming grills.
"Whatever."
She had one thing to do today: hang around by the fountain and stand there, as per her instructions for today. Oh, how she just wished classes would start: this setting certainly didn't suit her. And it wasn't like she could scare the newbies this early...
... Well, that's what some would think, anyway. Izumi, however, always managed to put someone in their place.

"If you don't know what you're supposed to do, act like you're in charge. Everyone will buy it, except for the people who ARE in charge. Then you can ask them what you're supposed to do." -- Harvey Morrison, on Communication
Free. Food. That's really all it took to get Amy Morrison out to the courtyard from her office attached to the infirmary. While yes, this was a paying job, and yes she was an independent woman now, the bills for Med School did not come cheap, so any opportunity where the young brunette didn't have to pay for her own meal (and possibly get enough leftovers for a meal or two later in the week) were very much appreciated and taken advantage of. Currently her plate has several skewers of beef and shrimp, along with a decent helping of rice and a spring roll sticking out of it like a smokestack. Now all she needed was a good place to sit...the fountain in the center of the yard would do nicely, since the spray never got far enough to soak the resident as she ate.
It's worth noting that while she was several years older than almost all the student body, Amy had the kind of slender body and short stature that could easily get her confused as one of the students. That she wore an outfit that could pass for another school's uniform also didn't do her many favors.

Ordinarily, 'students' wouldn't catch more than a passing glance from Alicia at this point of the year. Sure, she would respond to those that approached her, but those were passing interactions for directions and the like. Heck, it was rare for any student to guess that she was one of the school's teachers, and not some random angry-looking person in the middle of campus.
Of course, Ms. Izumi got her reputation for a reason, and some people did catch her eye. For example, there was this student who came along, with a near-ungodly amount of food on her plate, sitting on the edge of the fountain. For how much food was there, it seemed impossible that the girl was as small and thin as she was! However, what was more odd to Izumi was the fact that the student came way out here to eat, instead of staying with the rest of the crowd.
"... Hmph."
Well, she seemed happy and content enough to make an impression. With her bag still slung over her shoulder, Alice took a short walk over to the fountain, as if to walk by it, stopping right in front of the girl. She would snag one of the skewers of beef, then look down at the girl: "You leave enough for everybody else? You seem casual about starting the next year. Tell me, what do you hope this place does for ya?"
She was direct. And obviously, she assumed Amy was a student.

Two skewers were already devoid of their delicious contents when Amy even realized that she wasn't alone here. It's not that she intended to sequester herself, but the plate was precariously balanced as it stood, and it was unlikely that she'd make it to one of the tables without losing at least something. And even though she had more on her plate than what it was safely rated to carry, it was not at all pleasant to see someone just up and take one of her kebabs. "Hey! That was mine..." While she wanted to take it back, the point did stand that she had more than enough. Still, the implication that she was cleaning out the school's supply? Amy saw it as a low blow, but kept herself in check long enough to answer. What was she hoping for in the coming year?
"Well, I hope that this pays enough for my apartment, even though I doubt I'll ever be able to use it given how much paperwork I have to take care of before the year even starts. I really doubt I'll get another day this free until April at the earliest, though I would like to hope that most of the kids don't do anything too stupid..." Inhaling another skewer of shrimp, Amy swallowed and continued.
"But mostly I'm hoping that by the end of this year I'll have enough hours to say I've finished my residency and can make people call me 'Doctor' and put letters after my name when I sign things." With unerring accuracy, Amy throws a pair of emptied sticks away, embedding themselves in the plastic of a nearby garbage bag.
"So what 'bout you? What brings you here, aside from stealing food from nurses?"

Being that Ms. Izumi was, well, Alicia Izumi, Amy's complaint about the teacher taking away her food fell on deaf ears. Not even looking back towards the nurse, Izumi had already torn off a piece of beef, chewing it in her cheek as she asked the supposed student her question. And, honestly, she wasn't expecting much: even some of the students realized that the idea of a dueling college was somewhat ridiculous, which was why she had to be tough around them.
What Alice didn't expect, however, was for Amy to respond with a straight face... and much less give the answer that she did. Blinking, Alice sighed: "So wait, you're not a student? Feh." Biting her skewer clean, the teacher held the stick in her palm, pinching her sinus with a free hand. "I suppose you can take that one as a compliment. But to be frank, you look a little too young to be a doctor by the end of the year. ... Good on 'yah." Truly, Alice didn't have a real response of her own kind towards Amy, and such an accomplishment by such a young age was rather impressive: as a teacher who demanded hard work, she could not so-easily toss aside someone who was an example of that.
Even if she did look like a sheltered wish-washy girl. Ah, but the question was still returned:
"Me? I'm the one who will be teaching these kids how dueling works around here." Flicking the skewer towards the can, it clanged towards the edge, threatening to flip over before flopping back into the can. "Can't say its for any special degree or nothin' fancy like that, but if I do know anything, its dueling. And trust me, its not always a pretty sight... but you'd know that, 'doc: countless, strange investigations of injuries related towards the game. I figure these kids got to learn about it somewhere..."
With a sigh, Alice turned her head towards Ami. Sitting on the edge of the fountain, Alice turned her head aimlessly towards the sky. "Ya'nno, I think we might get along." Of course, Alice getting along with anyone had far-different meanings of the word: she was still going to be the brash person she always was. "At least as faculty, I guess. I'll try and keep the kids out of too much trouble."

Amy flashed a small smirk as the older woman realized her position wasn't just another kid looking to make trouble. "I'll take that as a compliment that living well has kept me looking young. So you teach dueling class? I'll be sure to drop by your office when I need deck help." Clearing off another shish of beef, Amy sighs and takes in what the professor is saying.
"I've heard of some of the crazy things that have happened to duelists - honestly it seems to be a load of crock to me. Of course, if things do go belly-up on us, I'll be ready to deal with it. Crises happen, and it's not really my job to ask questions other than 'where does it hurt' and 'does he have a pulse'." Amy looked at the sky as Alicia did, watching the clouds fly by.
"I'd appreciate it, keeping college kids in line must be a full-time job. I know it was for my teachers..."

"Oi, I wish 'living well' was something that came naturally to me. I mean, jeez: ten million things that a doctor can tell you to do!" Stretching her arm out, Izumi gave a sarcastic grin: "No offense to ya', of course. I can respect anything that comes out of hard work, and you certainly have that going for you. And- hm? Ah, yes, I can help a bit with deck construction... though that sheltered report-loving deck-building teacher might not like it all that much..."
Muttering that last part to herself through gritted teeth, perhaps just barely audible to Amy, Izumi's expression returned to normal as the doctor spoke of the 'crazy' theories that she had heard of. To this, Alice just gave a shrug: it would have been so easy to look like one of those supposed crock-pots, but Ms. Izumi barely knew this person at all! "Well, that's all we can hope for, really. Meh, you're probably going to just be dealing with a bunch of stuffy noses... are flu shots still in two weeks?" Keeping the conversation flowing, Alice finally stretched a hand towards the doctor:
"Alicia Izumi, by the way. 304 North Office." Introduction out of the way, Izumi gave a chuckle to that comment about 'keeping kids in line'. "Oh, don't worry, I know what language they speak. Trust me, you might be getting a few 'upset stomachs' about people trying to skip out on me, if you catch my drift." Giving a wink towards the doctor, the dueling instructor looked back up: "What do you think of the lot this year, anyway? Honestly, not too many of them get way down here..."

Amy nodded at Alicia's remark about hard work. While she really wasn't doing to to try and show off, the point still remained that she had to work her tail off in order to catch up for time lost to her illnesses. Speaking of...
"Yeah, two weeks. And I'll be glad if all I have to deal with are some stuffy noses." Shaking the teacher's hand, she gave a slim smile. "Amy Morrison. I...don't know my office's number, just look for the red cross above the door I guess." A nervous smile gave her pause to consider what she knew about the students she'd be working with for the coming months. "Nothing jumped out at me, but most of what I know of these kids are just their medical history. But if anyone comes to me trying to duck classes, they'll get a nice wake-up call...and probably hand cramps from doing my paperwork."
