At first glance, Roxanne appears to be a very prim and proper young lady, which is very much true. Her posture is always fairly stiff and polite. She rarely speaks out of turn, unless something is going on that worries or concerns her. Whenever she does speak out, her voice shakes and stutters as her nerves get to her. Roxanne is very awkward socially, finding herself unable to communicate with other’s nervously. She doesn’t understand how people work, and it frustrates her. Her nervousness is further expanded by stage fright that usually hits her during stressful moments. Because of her experiences in the professional dueling network, Roxanne is extremely self cautious of whatever she does. The result is a young woman who’s nerves are in the process of exploding at any given time.History:
Roxanne is a native to London, being born and raised there. Both her parents were archaeologists and she has two brothers, one older and one younger. Her younger brother is three years younger than her, and he was sent to a hospital when he was two years of age because of his weak body. Because of this, she often forgot he even existed growing up. Her other brother however, Kale, was a large influence in her life from his flamboyant hair styles to his signing her up for fencing without her knowledge or consent. Roxanne's parents were often out of town due to their work, so for all intensive reasons, Kale was basically a father figure to her, although he was only ten years her senior.House:
It was her third birthday when her mother decided to give her a special present. The gift was a deck of cards. Her mother said they were very popular in her hometown, and Roxanne was happy to have them. Over the next few years, Roxanne would constantly awaken in the middle of the night over whispers and mutterings that seemed to fill her room. Eventually, they subsided, however, occasionally the whispers would return once more to lay siege to her subconscious. When Roxanne was seven, her brother gave her a full deck of cards, saying the one her mother gave her was incomplete. Kale would go on to teach her how to duel too. She was dazzled by the game almost instantly, ecstatic to be able to learn something so fun from her older brother. The game was a wonderful form of escapism. She had rarely left the house on her own aside from school as a child. Her quiet and timid nature made it difficult for her to find friends in the classroom. She was a subject of bullying in her school because of this reason coupled with her unusual family situation, but Roxanne honestly didn't care as long as she had her brother. Yes, it was a bit of a brother complex, however, it never got through the stage of just dependence. Her joy to be able to play with her brother seemed to overshadow the curiosity and fear that filled her when the voices began whispering at night, all coming from the closet she kept the card in.
As Roxanne's tenth birthday drew closer, a letter arrived at the Greenfield residence. Kale read it, and then he retreated to his room. He didn't answer Roxanne when she knocked on the door, and he didn't leave the room for a long while. When he finally did, Roxanne had fallen asleep at the foot of the door waiting. The next day she was told what the letter held. Her parents had been reported deceased. The cause had been a cave in at one of their digs in Egypt. The worst part was the authorities only recovered one of the bodies. Only their father would be laid to rest. The funeral was quick and a short. The Greenfield family, while being wealthy enough to be considered one among the high social class, was well known for being the birth place of misers who piddled away their lives in worthless pursuits. Roxanne's parents were just considered another generation of insanity. Especially her father, who had the nerve to marry an unusual tattooed girl from Egypt. The few who arrived at the funeral couldn't help but whisper about his wife who hadn't been found. The tall mysterious woman with tattoos who could scare away a stampeding herd of buffalo with one glare was gossiped about frequently. Roxanne didn't remember her like that at all though. She remembered the warm smile, and how her hugs felt.
After the funeral Roxanne's brother began working. He didn't need to, the family had enough funds, but she supposed he needed to keep busy. So did she. With her brother mostly gone for work now, continuing their parent's work despite her pleas, Roxanne began to play the card game more seriously. The voices would come and go, as usual, but they came with more consistency. However, Roxanne kept playing; she kept filling her mind with strategies and card effects to smash the hollowed effect of her parent's death. Soon, when she heard the whispers, she didn't care. She would fall asleep to their soothing voices, and wake up barely remembering them. The moment word reached the streets of London about a school for Duel Monsters. The young girl almost flew to the website to register. At first it was somewhat difficult to apply, as the school was in Japan, and the site kept redirecting her to the one currently being built in Europe, but Roxanne couldn’t wait. She had to go to the one that was open!
When the complicated process was finished, Roxanne found herself preparing to leave. The young girl had spent most of her life hiding in her room with duel monster cards, but now she was going to leave her home. The thought of it made her feel extremely nervous, especially since she could only tell her brother through emails. Her farewell to him felt somewhat cold, chilling her spine. The flight to Japan was an uncomfortable and nerve wrecking one. When she arrived, the girl found herself barely managing to locate the docks to the Academy. On the ship, Roxanne went through all the information that had been emailed to her. She had taken the entrance exam electronically, but because of language differences, she had scored somewhat low, placing in Slifer. Due to her low ranking, Roxanne constantly found herself trying to prove her intelligence, and because of this, she could often be found in the library. Studying became an extremely normal thing for her. She would spend hours in the library reading various books on the history of the game and strategy guides. During her studying, there would always be a Ra girl sitting across from her named Mizuki. The two rarely spoke with the exception of exchanging comments on tests or books once in a while.
During her second year of study at Duel Academy, Roxanne became more withdrawn while becoming more active at the same time. While she spoke and tried to approach people less than before, the girl found herself engaging in duels much more often. She was a very talented duelist in small duels, however, during large scale duels done in the Academy’s arena with many students watching, stage fright would consume her. Because of this, it took her until she was half way through her second year to be promoted to Ra. Roxanne had managed to get to the point where she could duel in public without freezing up, and her dueling soon gained her a reputation on the campus as a respectable female duelist—especially with her quick promotion to Obelisk. Her small and timid nature made her some a somewhat popular girl in the Academy, many men finding her general appearance to be fairly cute. Because of this, boys constantly began to try and force their ways into her life. Some would wait outside her dorm, thinking it would be charming to escort her to class, while others would flock around her classroom seat. This caused her to become more fearful of other people, viewing them as imposing beasts wanting to impose themselves upon her with no concern for her own wishes. She isolated herself almost daily during her third year, hiding away in the Obelisk dorm, hoping the avoidance of the other students would send a clear message. The academy, while a haven for her interests, was beginning to turn into a frightening place. To add to her unusual popularity, there had been a recent string of unusual attacks on campus. Students were turning up in unusual comas within the campus.
The entire school was gripped by an unsteady nervous atmosphere. One weekend night, while most of the students were attending an event at the main campus, Roxanne found herself alone in the dorm’s lobby, enjoying the peaceful nature of the empty building. It was during this time that she heard a knock on the window that rested on the back wall of the dorm. Turning, she stared out at the shadowy figure. Suddenly, the windows in the dorm shattered as the man entered the dorm lobby. Roxanne jumped up, ready to turn and flee, however, something was wrong. There was a heavy sensation on her entire body, and she could feel a weight on every inch of her being. She peeked over her shoulder to eye the man, her entire body shaking with fear. It was then that the shadow duel began. He spoke as if it was a friendly game, but it clearly wasn’t. Three turns in, Roxanne found herself barely able to breathe. It was only through dumb luck that she beat the duelist. When the other Obelisk students returned to the dorm, they found her unconscious, having passed out from the duel. After she awoke in the infirmary, Roxanne could barely remember what happened. They assumed it was another attack connected to the chain of attacks on the island. She was the only one to survive an attack without falling into a coma.
Not long after the event, Roxanne graduated from the academy, very near to the top of her class. After graduation, she did what seemed most logical. With her education, she became a professional duelist. In the modern age, duelists could rival idols in terms of fans, and her feminine appearance paired with her dueling prowess made Roxanne a hot topic in the professional ring. Roxanne became well known for her polite and nervous nature, often being seen as a “moe” duelist. Despite her modest skills in the game, many other duelists began to ridicule her, calling her a duelist known for her looks rather than her skills. Soon people began to dismiss the skills she had worked so hard to fine tune in the Academy. Roxanne began receiving interview requests where it was made very clear they didn’t take her seriously as a duelist. When she began to talk about duel monsters, the interviewers and even some fans would skip over the subject and go onto her appearance or if she had any plans related to idol work. It was during one such interview that a host decided to pull up the results from an internet search of her name. Only a small fraction of the posts were concerning her dueling. In shock, Roxanne’s career reeled and she only left her apartment to duel in tournaments. To couple with this, nightmares fueled by the vague memories of her shadow realm experience began to plague her sleep. Finally, Roxanne decided to step back from her life and attend the Domino College.
