Ticka ticka ticka ticka ticka.
The sound of the clock in the library was unusual. It was a digital clock made to sound and look exactly like an older one. The holographic arms twitched and moved in the same fashion as a simple gear clock. However, the sound was somewhat off. The ticks dipped up, creating an unusual sound towards the end of each sound. The sound almost resembled a toy train.
Various other sounds could be heard intermingling with the ticking clock as well. The sound of the librarian dusting the books after a relatively slow summer was the most prominent sound. Following that came the soft shuffling of decks and books. The college had recently begun it's latest semester, and as such, the library was fairly empty. Most students weren't worried about studying just yet. Even the ones that were in the library were not hovering over books. Instead, they were shuffling and arranging cards to be used during this semesters classes.
At this college maintaining a proper deck was just as essential as studying for tests. Roxanne leaned over, eyeing the neatly separated cluster of cards in front of her. Her Harpie deck had been with her since she was a little girl, and over the years she had tried to make minimal edits to it. However, times were changing, and the game was becoming more complex. Gritting her teeth, she continued to sort through what would be this years deck.

Tack tack tack tack tack.
Her legs were crossed as she sat in her chair, her body parallel to the table that her and Roxanne were sitting at. In front of her was a book stand, propping open what was not a book on dueling nor card games, but on neuroscience. She had her head turned towards the book, red rimmed glasses perched upon her nose as her dark grey eyes scanned the page. She was shuffling her deck to keep her fingers preoccupied as she studied.
She was here not to become a professional duelist, but for something that she felt was a far nobler cause. The only reason she dueled these days was to understand the game and to understand the inner workings. Heaven forbid another attack to happen like the one that happened at Duel Academy a few years ago. The awareness of magic- and the desire for power- was growing steadily since the Shadow Realm became a known fact.
Soon, people like her would be needed, to heal the injured. To understand the physiological effects of shadow magic upon the physical body.
She leaned forward to examine a diagram, and one of her braided ebony pigtails fell over her shoulder. She frowned quietly at it and then she stopped shuffling her deck. She picked up the book and set it down on a tall pile of other books that she kept in her corner of the table, grabbed another book and set it open; this time, about the concept of spirits from different realms. She flipped through the pages and muttered under her breath incoherently, then smirked a little.
She looked up at Roxanne's cards and pointed quietly to the Dragons.
“You have fourty-two cards. Take out the unnecessary ones.” She commented quietly in Japanese to the British woman. Her voice was lower than it was when they had first met; over time, she had developed a lovely mid-tone that felt rich to listen to. She didn't use it often, but it was soothing when she used it properly. It was honestly too bad that she was so direct and abrupt with her speech.

In the library once again Modero thought to himself. It seemed that he could never rest or read in his room now. His room mate always kept him up and although Modero got plenty of sleep at night, it was never a bad time to take a nap. He hadn't been in the college long but in his time here he still hadn't made any real friends. The odd 'hello' in the corridor seemed to be the extent of his relationship and outside his room, he didn't really speak to his room mate. He continued walking and soon reach the doors to the library.
He pushed them open taking no care in trying to keep quiet. The library was a big place and the chances of him having caused a major disruption were probably minuscule. He didn't have classes for a while so a nap was definitely in order, or at least he could study for... for something. Like usual, the library was pretty much empty so there was plenty of space for Modero to 'study'.
He wasn't wearing his usual clothes, this time having gone for the more casual look as opposed to his usual trench coat. For now he was just wearing some jeans and a white top which had a picture of Domino City on it and some text in Kanji. Standing at 6"4 he wasn't the smallest of people but he was small enough to not attract much attention to himself. His hair looked, like it usually did though being spiked up in a very shaggy look.
He finally decided to stop at a table, not far from where 2 girls were based. He had probably seen them before at some point but he had never interacted with them. Modero wasn't really good with faces and so he just shrugged it off and grabbed a random book from a shelf perpendicular to his table. The History of Dueling: Volume 3 was what was on the cover of the book. As usual Modero opened the book and pretended to read it, his mind however being elsewhere. His nap would begin soon.

Roxanne gulped silently as Mizuki spoke. Looking up, the girl nodded slowly. There were two or three cards too many, but she couldn’t decide which ones were unnecessary. Each card seemed to have a purpose in her mind! Chewing on her lower lip, Roxanne peeked up from her cards towards Mizuki, canting her head to the side. Gulping, Roxanne closed her eyes as she picked up one of her cards, Harpie’s Pet Dragon. Then, she put it back down exactly where it had been before. She did this several times with various different cards, her face turning a bright red all the while. Finally, she gave up, resting her forehead on the table while releasing a deep breath.
“I don’t think any cards are unnecessary though…” she muttered softly. Unlike Mizuki, Roxanne hadn’t changed much appearance wise since their Academy days. If anything, it may be possible that she was regressing since their graduation. Roxanne looked at Mizuki, blinking for a moment. She envied the other girl’s calm and direct nature. It always felt like Mizuki would know what to do in almost any situation. They didn’t talk much, but Roxanne was almost positive that the other girl should have become the professional duelist in place of her.
Just then a loud slam interrupted her thoughts. Looking up, Roxanne blinked slowly as an incredibly tall student walked into the library. She chewed on her lower lip as her eyes went down to the card. Her head hung low, not wanting to make eye contact.

BANG.
Immediately, Mizuki's train of thought was cut off by some asshat who decided that a library wasn't the appropriate place to be quiet. Her eyes narrowed and slid from Roxanne's face to the rude man who had entered the library, her fingers drumming ever so slightly upon the oak table at which they sat. He was a very tall man at 6'4”, wearing very casual clothes as if to not draw attention. She watched him trail over to his table, which happened to be close by. Her eyes rolled in annoyance. She looked back to Roxanne's cards and rubbed her chin, staring down at the hardened pieces of paper and other materials.
“Take out Rescue Rabbit. It only works for normal monsters. Take out one Call of the Haunted. Take out Forbidden Lance, add one more Summoner Monk. That is my suggestion.” she stated firmly. She glanced back at the man, who was now attempting to read. That was a very peculiar way of reading. It almost looked like his eyes were glazed, not reading the page, like he was sleeping with his eyes open.
She frowned and sighed loudly, flipping a page in her book and glancing down at the cards again as she did so. “Couldn't hurt to fit Icarus Attack in there somewhere as well.” She mused as her eyes scanned the page again.

Just like Modero thought, nothing had really changed since Duel Academy student wise. The semester had barely even started and people were already changing and preparing their decks. This for some reason was never something that Youta enjoyed doing. He had used virtually the same deck since he a was just a child, only changing certain cards here or there due to rule changes or flaws in his deck.
Modero was getting the gist of what the book was about but he was barely reading it. Something about Egypt and Pharaohs were what Modero could remember but other than that Modero would not be able to tell anyone about the book. To say he was skimming would even be pushing it. He let his mind wander and he started to wonder about what was going to happen in college. He didn't have any classes today and he wasn't in the mood to do anything.
Then came a loud sigh from one of the girls on the table nearby. Modero just decided to ignore it for now but it did pull him out of his daydreaming world. It was weird, anywhere else and that sigh would be unheard but in the library, even flipping a page in a book would be loud in the library.
